When I was much, much younger in my teens and early 20's I was very much into the Photo Realism art movement. I would paint from one of my photographs and would meticulously work on every single detail. This technique was also applied my drawings. Pictured here is a poor iphone capture of one of very few remaining images from that era of work. This is a graphite pencil drawing on paper of Bash Bish Falls, a waterfall in Bash Bish Falls State Park in the Taconic Mountains of southwestern Massachusetts. I grew up in the Catskill Mountains of Upstate NY. My inspiration and backyard was the same landscape that lead to the development of the famed Hudson River School of Painting. The Hudson River School was a mid-19th century American art movement embodied by a group of landscape painters whose aesthetic vision was influenced by Romanticism. The paintings typically depict the Hudson River Valley and the surrounding area, including the Catskill, Adirondack, and White Mountains. For almost a decade I followed in the footsteps of these Hudson River painters and often I would seek out the exact location where they painted. I tried to capture images of both the location and atmosphere I found in their original paintings. The technique I used in my work was to grid off one of my photographs into small squares ( typically a one inch grid system) and then turn the image upside down so my focus was on the details and not the finished piece. The resulting work would take many hours of very painstaking focus. I am getting back into painting with less focus on the details and more on the "painterly" qualities of the work. I struggle at times trying to be more loose with the brush and less rigid with color choices. "CATSKILL MOUNTAINS TWIN FALLS" Acrylic on board 1970 I grew up in the beautiful Catskill Mountains. As a young artist I was influenced by the Hudson River School painters such as Thomas Cole and Frederic Church. I sought out the same locations where these landscape painters of the 19th Century used to roam. This acrylic painting on composition board was completed over 50 years ago. During the 1970's and 1980's I was totally dedicated to my landscape painting. This week while sorting through a mountain of old slides, I came across a collection of my paintings and drawings from my high school and college years. I was totally into the "Photorealism" movement of the time. Photorealism is a genre of art that encompasses painting, drawing and other graphic media, in which an artist studies a photograph and then attempts to reproduce the image as realistically as possible in another medium. I would use one of my photographs for the subject matter, sometimes after a quick sketch in the field. I hope you enjoy these since I will be posting more over the next few weeks. Meanwhile I will be locked in my studio working on new pieces during the threats of Covid-19. THE ROAD NEVER TRAVELED" 4' x 5' framed canvas painting. During this time of isolation I have been painting more than I have in a very long time. That's a good thing! A very good thing. The title of this recently finished painting has personal meaning to me. This is one of my first commissioned paintings ever. The canvas size of 4 feet by 5 feet is the largest painting I have ever completed. The more abstract approach was also an unknown approach to my more painterly/realistic style. This painting was a constant work in progress with numerous changes from shape placement, changes in colors and my ongoing personal struggle with abstractions. The final painting consists of many layers of paint over paint. Tonight was the big reveal and the client/dear friends reaction was awesome. They loved it! I thank them for both the commissioned work and the push I needed to try something out of my comfort zone.
